Course Credit Requirements

The MS program requires a minimum of 30 credits. The program requires a minimum of 14 credits in major field coursework (including 5 credits in required core courses [see below]), a minimum of 6 credits in the minor field or supporting coursework. The Plan A MS degree (research option) also requires a minimum of 10 thesis credits. The Plan B MS degree (project/coursework option) replaces the thesis credits with a minimum of 10 additional coursework or special projects credits.

The PhD program requires a minimum of 52 credits in total, consisting of 10 credits in required core courses, a minimum of 6 additional credits in either the emphasis area (if one is chosen) or in major field coursework, and a minimum of 12 credits in the minor or supporting program area. An additional 24 doctoral thesis credits must also be completed; however doctoral thesis credits may not be taken before completion of all program coursework requirements and advancement to candidacy. The student’s graduate committee and graduate advisor will approve the selection of appropriate courses to meet this requirement. Additional coursework may be required depending on the student’s emphasis and background.

  1. LAAS 5050: Integrated Topics in Land 7 Atmospheric Science (3 cr, Fall)
  2. LAAS 8128: (1.5 cr, Fall)
  3. LAAS 8123: Research Ethics (0.5, cr, Spring)

Additional Requirements:

    • LAAS 8777: Thesis credits: Master's (10 cr., required for Plan A)
    • Specified courses in the emphasis area if one is chosen
    • Additional courses in the major area as determined by the student in consultation with their graduate committee
    • A minimum of 6 credits in the minor or supporting area

  5. LAAS 8550: Teaching Experience (3 cr., Fall, Spring)

Additional Requirements:

    • LAAS 8888; Thesis credits: doctoral (24 cr required)
    • A minimum of 6 credits in the major area. For students in a named emphasis area, these 6 credits must come from the list of required courses for that emphasis area. For students not in a named emphasis area, courses will be chosen from the major area in consultation with the student's graduate committee.
    • A minimum of 12 credits in the minor or supporting area.

Emphasis Area Requirements

Soil Science Emphasis

Required courses in the Soil Science Emphasis Area are:

SOIL 5515: Soil Genesis and Landscape Relations (3 cr, Spring), and one of the following:

  • SOIL 5232; Vadose Zone Hydrology (3 cr, Fall)
  • SOIL 5311: Soil Chemistry and Mineralogy (3 cr, Fall), or
  • SOIL 5611: Soil Biology and Fertility (3 cr)

Atmospheric Science Emphasis

Required courses in the Atmospheric Science Emphasis Area are:

  • LAAS 5425: Atmospheric Processes I (3 cr, Fall '13)
  • LAAS 5426: Atmospheric Processes II (3 cr, Spring '14)

Students may also elect to design thier own plan of study in conjunctoni with their graduate committee.

Proposed Format

First Semester

LAAS 5050: Integrated Topics in Land & Atmospheric Science (3 cr, Fall), Nater

    • team taught by faculty
    • cover key bridging topics in intellectually rigorous way, allowing for different student backgrounds
Second Semester

LAAS 5051: Research in Land & Atmospheric Science (2 cr, Spring), Allan

    • proposal-based class (required PhD only)
    • write and review proposals
    • present prospective research
    • discuss effective presentation skills as small groups
    • learn communication skills needed for orals and PhD defense
    • preparation for proposal part of preliminary exam

LAAS 8128: Soil, Water & Climate Seminar (1 cr, Fall)
